From 115 applications for a media art residency in Košice, we chose a truly exceptional artist who uses satellite data in his work.
Artist Abel Korinsky from Berlin is the resident we picked for a two-month media art residency in our city in the upcoming autumn. The art piece he will create will be presented during the Art & Tech Days festival, which reflects Košice’s membership in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. His studies focused on music, sound, literature, social sciences, and history. He has won several awards in his career so far – he has received, for example, the Mercedes-Benz Kunst Award and the Young European Artist Trieste Contemporanea Award.
In his work, Abel will use real-time data of the Starlink satellite program from the company SpaceX. In a joint collaboration with the Turkish artist Orhan “aib” Kavrakoğlu, he will use the GPS data of his residency and track the satellite that is above Košice. In particular, he shall use specific and online disposable satellite data such as speed, altitude, longitude, and latitude and transfer them to a physical audiovisual installation. In this way, he will materialize signals from the satellite into a visible form for visitors in real space.
